A cardiologist discusses how he helps patients decide on what treatment course to take.

Ivan C. Ho, MD, a cardiologist and director of cardiac electrophysiology with the USC Cardiac and Vascular Institute, part of Keck Medicine of USC, explains how he helps patients make the best decisions.

When it comes to helping patients make treatment decisions for cardiac arrhythmias, the main consideration is the frequency and severity of their symptoms. For instance, if a patient is experiencing temporary heart arrythmias that aren’t dangerous and don’t require treatment — and if the patient does not want treatment — then I would hold off on treatment, respecting the patient’s preference.

Sometimes, however, not getting treatment might make the heart weaker in the future or cause more problems down the road. In this instance, I would explain the negative consequences to the patient and try to encourage them to get treatment.

Every patient has a unique set of circumstances surrounding the same condition, so the best way doctors can help a patient decide on a treatment plan is by really educating them about the different pros and cons of each treatment option. If a patient is scared or anxious about a procedure, my job is to spend extra time demystifying the procedure for them by explaining exactly what the treatment does, what equipment is used and what are the possible outcomes.

In some circumstances, I may even ask if the patient if they would be willing to talk to another patient of mine who has had firsthand experience with the same treatment. This way, the patient can hear about what a procedure is like from someone who has experienced their situation.

The most important part of a doctor’s role is to really listen to the patient, understand their unique circumstances and needs and then help guide them toward making a decision that works best for them.
