Otosclerosis is a problem with one of the small bones in your ear that prevents sound from reaching your inner ear. It happens when a bone in your middle ear is stuck in place and unable to vibrate as it should. Stapedotomy or stapedectomy surgery replaces the bone to improve hearing.

Your bone tissue is continually restoring itself, called bone remodeling. Otosclerosis happens when the remodeling of a small bone in your middle ear behind your eardrum — called the stapes — is abnormal, making it stiff and unable to transmit sound through your ear.
Otosclerosis surgery replaces part or all of the stapes bone with a prosthesis (artificial bone) to allow sound to reach the inner ear and restore hearing. Your doctor will explain which procedure is right for you.
Stapedotomy and stapedectomy surgeries are outpatient procedures and don’t require an overnight hospital stay. Surgeons perform the procedures through your ear, so there’s no visible scarring. These approaches are highly successful, with a 90-95% chance of hearing improvement after surgery.
