Learn more about the difference between Palliative Care and Hospice.
USC Adult and Pediatric Palliative Care
Keck Medical Center Administration and the Departments of Medicine and Anesthesia have collaborated to provide the Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care Consult Service at the Keck and USC Norris Cancer Hospitals. Inpatient physician consults are available by USC faculty member, Dr. Sunita Puri, who trained in Internal Medicine at UCSF and completed a fellowship in Palliative and Hospice Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Carin van Zyl, director of the Adult and Pediatric Palliative Care team at LAC+USC Medical Center, will serve as Medical Director for the service and will provide additional Keck/Norris education and support with Dr. Puri for the growing multidisciplinary Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care team. Recruitment of an additional physician, and augmented chaplaincy support will round out this comprehensive service.
Palliative care teams treat patients who suffer from physical symptoms and the psycho social stresses of serious illness – whatever the diagnosis and at any stage of treatment. In collaboration with the primary health care team, a palliative/supportive care team can help patients and their families navigate the complex decisions that come with their illness and make timely, informed decisions about their care.
The Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care consult service will be available Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. Dr. Puri is our lead Palliative Care physician at Keck Medical Center and can be reached at (800) USC-CARE.
