TJ Malseed, Chief Digital and Information Officer for Keck Medicine of USC, discusses how IT strategy elevates patient care

Each morning, our providers and staff log in to their systems and seamlessly connect to the tools they need to deliver exceptional care. They do so with confidence, knowing their data is safeguarded by a robust, enterprise-level cybersecurity framework.

At our clinics, patients check in using electronic tablets, eliminating tedious paperwork and enhancing efficiency for both themselves and our care teams. During appointments, artificial intelligence-driven scribes transcribe notes in real time, allowing physicians to focus entirely on their patients.

We often take these technological conveniences for granted, yet they are the result of years of strategic innovation by our digital and information team—a team I am honored to lead. This department supports over 23,000 users and manages more than 400 applications across Keck Medicine, ensuring everything from routine administrative functions to telemedicine services operate successfully. Our patient portal provides secure, real-time access to medical records, test results, and direct messaging with providers, reinforcing our commitment to accessible, patient-centered care.

A core mission of our IT strategy is continuous improvement through automation and integration, always with the goal of elevating patient care. By harnessing data intelligently, we empower both patients and providers with the insights needed for optimal decision-making. Looking ahead, we are constantly evaluating emerging technologies to ensure Keck Medicine remains at the forefront of digital transformation.

I am incredibly proud of our team’s accomplishments, which have streamlined complex processes and enhanced efficiency across the health system. For example, employee onboarding is now almost fully automated, significantly reducing administrative burden. Likewise, our new insurance verification system delivers approvals in seconds, expediting access to care.

Transforming Critical Patient Transfers with AI

One of our most ambitious initiatives focuses on optimizing the Keck Hospital of USC Transfer Center, one of the busiest in Southern California. More than 50% of all hospital admissions come through this center, and these patients often require highly specialized, time-sensitive care. Keck Hospital maintains one of the highest case mix indexes in the nation, underscoring the complexity of the cases we handle daily.

Care teams previously had to manually review up to 200 pages of patient medical records to determine transfer eligibility, a process that could take up to four hours. To expedite this critical workflow, our digital and information team has successfully deployed an AI-powered solution that now analyzes and summarizes these 200 pages in just two minutes. This transformative technology has drastically reduced decision-making time, allowing our providers to focus on delivering life-saving care faster than ever.

Expanding Access and Advancing Remote Care

Another major initiative already implemented is our automated waitlist system. Patients seeking earlier appointments can now register for real-time cell phone notifications when a cancellation occurs, improving access to timely care.

Additionally, we are advancing remote patient monitoring through wearable technology and connected devices. Many of our service lines have already equipped patients with digital tools to track their health metrics from home, and we are actively expanding these capabilities. This shift enables patients to receive access to timely care and represents the future of personalized, tech-enabled health care.

The Future of Health Care Innovation

In an era where agility and innovation define success, I am deeply grateful for our team’s ability to push the boundaries of what is possible in health care technology. Their work doesn’t just enhance operational efficiency—it directly impacts patient outcomes and experiences. They are not only problem-solvers and pioneers but, in my view, true miracle workers shaping the future of medicine.
