Comprehensive Care for Overactive Thyroid and Graves’ Disease

The thyroid gland, located in your neck, produces hormones that regulate bodily functions like metabolism and digestion. Sometimes, your body produces too much of the thyroid hormone (thyroxine). When this happens, your thyroid becomes overactive, a condition called hyperthyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism is often linked to Graves’ disease. Graves’ disease happens when your immune system makes an antibody that causes the thyroid to produce too much hormone.

Our experts offer holistic thyroid care. Our team works closely to make an accurate diagnosis and discuss treatment options.

Hyperthyroidism Symptoms We Treat

Hyperthyroidism can resemble other health problems, so it may be difficult to tell what’s wrong.

You may experience:

  • Anxiety
  • Changes in menstrual cycles
  • Fast or irregular heart rate
  • Hand tremors
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Increased hunger
  • More frequent bowel movements
  • Sweating
  • Weight loss

Graves’ disease can also cause symptoms, including eye swelling (orbitopathy) and an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). Tell your provider about any symptoms you have, even if they’re minor.

Overactive Thyroid Treatments We Offer

Your doctor may use several tests to diagnose hyperthyroidism, including:

  • A physical exam to look for signs like rapid heart rate and warm skin
  • A thyroid antibody blood test to check if Graves’ disease is a factor
  • Blood tests to check thyroid hormone levels
  • Imaging tests, like an ultrasound

Depending on the cause of your hyperthyroidism, your doctor may recommend different treatment options. These can include medications, radioactive iodine therapy or thyroidectomy surgery.

Hyperthyroid medications block your thyroid’s ability to make hormones. It usually takes two to three months to restore normal thyroid function. However, your symptoms will start to improve after a few days or weeks.

Your doctor may suggest radioactive iodine therapy to treat your hyperthyroidism. This therapy involves taking radioactive iodine by mouth in a capsule or liquid form. The iodine targets and destroys your thyroid cells to cure hyperthyroidism. Usually, this treatment fully destroys your thyroid. As a result, you’ll have to take lifelong medication to maintain normal thyroid hormone levels.

Thyroidectomy is a surgery to remove all or part of your thyroid gland. Depending on how much thyroid is removed, you will need to take thyroid hormone medication for the rest of your life.

Our thyroid experts will develop a unique treatment plan for you. We’ll be by your side through diagnosis, treatment and recovery so you can focus on what matters most — healing.
