About Vincent Ngoc Duy Nguyen, MD

Vincent N. Nguyen, MD, is a neurosurgeon with Keck Medicine of USC specializing in blood vessel disorders of the brain and neck and skull base tumors. He offers both open microsurgery and minimally invasive, catheter-based treatment for complex cerebrovascular and skull base conditions.

Dr. Nguyen treats brain aneurysms; arteriovenous malformations and dural arteriovenous fistulas; moyamoya disease; ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke; carotid artery disease and cavernous malformations; and acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas), meningiomas and other skull base tumors.

His expertise includes cerebral bypass and revascularization, aneurysm clipping, coiling and flow diversion, embolization and microsurgical treatment of vascular malformations, mechanical thrombectomy, carotid endarterectomy and stenting, cerebral angiography and skull base tumor surgery. He performs acoustic neuroma surgery in collaboration with neurotologists.

Dr. Nguyen was drawn to neurosurgery by its technical demands and by how directly an operation can change a patient’s life. At Keck Medicine, open surgical and endovascular specialists jointly review complex aneurysms and vascular malformations. This collaboration allows him to tailor treatment to each patient’s needs and, when appropriate, combine techniques. He also provides second opinions and helps patients decide whether observation, minimally invasive treatment or surgery is the best next step.

Dr. Nguyen received his medical degree from Temple University, completed neurosurgery residency training at the University of Tennessee and Semmes Murphey Clinic in Memphis and completed endovascular and open cerebrovascular fellowships at USC. Before returning to USC, he served on the neurosurgery faculty at the University of Rochester Medical Center and received the department’s Joseph V. McDonald, MD, Excellence in Teaching Award.

A clinical assistant professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, Dr. Nguyen studies which patients may be at highest risk of stroke and benefit most from bypass surgery. He collaborates on multicenter stroke-device trials, has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles and serves on the editorial boards of two neurosurgical journals. Raised in San Jose, he played college tennis at the University of California, San Diego, completed the Los Angeles Marathon, and enjoys hiking and spending time with his family.

I treat every patient with careful attention to detail and clear, honest communication. I want patients and their families to understand their options and to have their questions answered at every step. And I will do whatever it takes to maximize each individual patient’s outcome.
