Interdisciplinary team approach for better patient outcomes

If you are hospitalized due to a major injury, disease or surgery, you may need rehabilitation therapy to regain your mobility, strength and overall independence.

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) at USC Arcadia Hospital brings together a world-class team of doctors, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians and nurses to help you recover and get back home to the life you love.

The ARU is home to a comprehensive, patient-centered program that serves all Keck Medicine of USC patients and focuses on improving the functional independence of medically complex patients. Our multidisciplinary team works with patients and their families to develop an individualized plan of care that sets achievable goals to improve that patient’s quality of life and facilitate their reintegration to the community.

The ARU is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services, including rehabilitation.

 

Our team uses the latest clinical and technological advances in rehabilitation medicine, nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to help you improve issues with:

  • Activities of daily living
  • Cognitive abilities
  • Mobility
  • Self-care
  • Speech and communication skills, and swallowing

We will work closely with you and your loved ones throughout your stay in ARU with the goal of sending you home or to the most appropriate discharge location.

Conditions We Treat

Our inpatient rehabilitation team is highly experienced in rehabilitation therapies for a wide range of conditions and injuries, including the most complex cases.

This includes:

  • Arthritic syndromes
  • Brain injuries (traumatic and/or non-traumatic), including encephalitis, brain tumors and hypoxic encephalopathy
  • Cancer
  • Debility (physical weakness)
  • Fractures, including hip, pelvis and femur fractures and/or major multiple fractures
  • Heart conditions, such as:
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Coronary artery disease
  • Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients
  • Limb amputations (upper and lower extremity)
  • Major multiple traumas
  • Mobility issues
  • Neurological conditions, such as:
    • Cerebral palsy
    • Critical illness myopathy
    • Guillian-Barré syndrome
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Parkinson’s disease
  • Organ transplantation, including:
    • Heart transplants

  • Daily management, oversight, and care by board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists 
  • Comprehensive evaluation and individualized plan of care to set achievable goals 
  • 24 hour registered nursing care 
  • Nationally ranked OT and PT departments 
  • Occupational therapy (OT) focused on improving everyday living skills of eating, bathing, and dressing, vocational retraining and planning for community reintegration 
  • Physical therapy (PT) focused on restoring function, increasing coordination, stability, strength, and endurance

Admissions Criteria

How do I get inpatient rehabilitation care at the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at USC Arcadia Hospital

To start, you need a patient assessment. All patients are evaluated prior to admission to determine their potential to participate in and benefit from inpatient rehabilitation. This includes a review of their medical, physical and cognitive condition, previous and current levels of function, and psychosocial and cultural background.

How do you decide who is admitted to the Acute Rehabilitation Unit?

To participate in our inpatient rehabilitation program, patients must meet the following guidelines.

  1. Medical diagnosis that results in functional impairment
  2. Medically stable but continues to need supervision and care
  3. Has a functional and/or cognitive impairments interfering with their ability to perform activities of daily living (mobility, communication, toileting, bathing, dressing, eating, cooking, etc.)
  4. Functional impairments needing a level of assistance greater than supervision
  5. Reasonable discharge disposition that is not skilled nursing facility or lower level of care
  6. Potential to make progress toward functional independence, with or without durable medical equipment: need to establish reasonable patient and/or family goals
  7. Patient needs at least two therapy services (PT, ST, OT)
  8. Can tolerate three hours of therapy in five out of seven days or, with physician order, 15 hours over seven days

We accept patient referrals from several sources, including:

    • Private physicians
    • Hospitals
    • Other post-acute providers
    • Insurance companies
    • Agencies serving persons with disabilities

Referral patients may be admitted from a hospital, surgery center, clinic, skilled nursing and long-term care facilities, as well as from home.

The ARU’s interdisciplinary team includes experienced physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, social workers, case managers, rehabilitation nurses, and other clinicians dedicated to the ARU.
